I have recently learned about Flash Fiction. A cool way to write powerful prose, Flash Fiction is storytelling in less than 1000 words. The moment I learned about it, I wanted to try it. I already had a cool idea for a future story exploring the emotion and pull of depression.

Depression is something I have battled off and on over the last decade. This medium gives me an opportunity to create a visual scene through a concise story that would allow me to be vulnerable with my own experiences.

So, one early morning camping with my family, I penned a quick draft while everyone around me slept. My breath puffed in steady clouds as the ink struggled to depart the freezing pen. 304 words later, I stared at my journal, smiling at my first Flash Fiction.

The editing process was beautiful as I simplified, refined, and magnified the work down to 298 words. I believe the story is a meaningful way to help others understand the internal struggle of depression while offering hope to those who also struggle.
