Comparison can quietly destroy your confidence and leave you feeling like you're never enough.

The problem is that comparison is usually unfair from the beginning. We compare our insecurities, failures, regrets, and struggles—the things we know about ourselves internally—to the success, confidence, appearance, and accomplishments we can see in someone else externally.

In other words, we're comparing our behind-the-scenes to someone else's highlight reel.

If comparison is affecting your self-esteem or mental health, practice this simple pattern:

Notice. Label. Redirect.

Notice when comparison is pulling you down. Label what's happening: “I'm comparing myself.” Then redirect your attention toward your own values, goals, and progress.

Someone else's success is not evidence of your failure.

Heal. Grow. Become.

Don't Get Caught In The Comparison Trap!

Sometimes therapy looks like sitting in an office. Sometimes it looks like getting outside, moving your body, and reconnecting with the world around you.

When you're struggling with depression, your world can start to shrink. You spend more time in your head, less time moving, and less time engaging with things that help you feel grounded and alive.

That's one reason getting outside can be so powerful. Walking, being in nature, noticing what's around you, and simply moving forward can help interrupt that cycle.

You don't have to feel motivated first. Start small. Get outside. Take the walk. Notice what's around you.

Sometimes the next step toward feeling better is literally a step.

Find Your Peace!

Depression can convince you that nobody needs you and nothing you do really matters. And when you start believing that, it becomes easier to withdraw and stop doing the very things that give your life meaning.

That’s one reason behavioral activation is such an important tool for treating depression. Instead of waiting until you feel motivated or purposeful, deliberately engage in something meaningful.

Give yourself something to be responsible for.

Walk the dog. Help your kid. Volunteer. Care for something. Help a neighbor. Take responsibility for a project.

You don’t have to figure out the purpose of your entire life today. Just find one small thing that needs you.

Depression asks, “What’s the point?”

Responsibility gives you an answer: “This needs to be done—and I’m the one who’s going to do it.”

Find something that matters. Then make yourself matter to it.

Prescription for Depression: Get Up and Do Something

If you’re struggling with depression, you might need a little solar energy for your soul. ☀️

And there’s real science behind it.

Bright-light therapy has long been used to treat seasonal depression, and newer research suggests it can also be a helpful addition to treatment for nonseasonal depression.

So today’s prescription is simple: get outside and get some light.

Sit on the porch. Eat lunch outside. Take a short walk. You don’t have to accomplish anything—the goal is simply to get out of the house and into the daylight.

Depression often makes us want to withdraw, close the blinds, and hide from the world.

Today, do the opposite.

Open the door. Step outside. Get a little solar energy for your soul.

Prescription for Depression: Sunshine

If you’re struggling with depression, sleeping more might actually be making you feel worse.

Sleep is incredibly important for mental health—but more time in bed doesn’t necessarily mean better sleep. Depression can make you feel exhausted, which makes it tempting to sleep in, take long naps, or stay in bed when you don’t have anywhere to be. Over time, that irregular schedule can disrupt your body’s natural sleep-wake rhythm.

So try a simple prescription: pick a consistent wake-up time.

Choose something realistic. Get up at roughly the same time every day. And when the alarm goes off, put your feet on the floor.

You may not feel motivated to get up. That’s okay. Sometimes your brain doesn’t need more time in bed—it needs rhythm and consistency.

Set the time. Then put your feet on the floor.

Prescription for Depression: Get a Sleep Rhythm

Are you problem-solving—or are you ruminating?

Depression can trap you in repetitive thoughts that feel productive but aren't actually getting you anywhere. You replay what happened, question yourself, worry about the future, and keep circling the same problem.

One strategy for interrupting that cycle is simple:

Notice. Label. Redirect.

Notice when your thoughts are repeating.
Label what's happening: “I'm ruminating.”
Redirect your attention toward something that actually engages you—take a walk, make something, clean, play a game, or connect with someone.

And no, scrolling doesn't count.

You don't have to solve every thought. Sometimes you just need to stop feeding it.
